Rajini is a powerful and important political figure who is well-respected throughout all of southern India. Some say he is even more powerful than the Gods themselves, and that makes him dangerous for those who disagree with his methods. When word gets out that Rajini has stolen a young woman's child and wants to trade her in for another much wealthier woman, her husband goes on a rampage to find his daughter and exact revenge. His daughter is held hostage, and Rajini knows he has to bring this man to him. He comes up with a plan of his own that involves the unusual hero of the film. "Ra.One" was released in more than 600 screens worldwide on 1 July 2010, including 325 screens in Tamil Nadu. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who noted its technical competence and entertainment value, while some criticised it for being an outdated concept of fantasy films. "RaOne" opened on 1,600 screens at number one in Tamil Nadu, while grossing US$1.7 million during its first day alone at the Chennai box office. The film grossed a total of approximately US$1.5 million over its opening weekend, placing it number one at the Chennai box office. By the end of its opening weekend, "Ra.One" grossed a total of US$2 million at the Chennai box office alone, making it Rajinikanth's most successful release in Chennai since "Sivaji" (2007). During the first five days since release, "Ra.One" grossed a total of from all regions in India, including from Tamil Nadu alone. In its second weekend at the Indian box-office, "Ra. One" earned a total of , again placing it number one at the box-office in Chennai, and in Tamil Nadu. Within eleven days of its release, "Ra.One" grossed a total of from India and from Chennai alone. The film continued its strong run in Tamil Nadu, grossing another during the first three weeks since its release, bringing its total box-office gross to approximately , while also being declared a hit.
